I’m proud and thrilled to announce that my narrative nonfiction picture book The Penguin of Ilha Grande – From Animal Rescue to Extraordinary Friendship, published by Charlesbridge Publishing will be on shelves January 17, 2023. The story won the 2017 Works-in-Progress Award from the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Honk! An oil-covered penguin washes up on the beach on Ilha Grande, an island off the coast of Brazil. Seu João acts swiftly and saves its life. Soon man and penguin are best friends. Dindim the penguin won’t return to the wild, no matter how much Seu João coaxes him.

One day, though, Dindim does swim away. Seu João is sad, but he knows it’s best for the wild penguin. But then . . . Honk! Dindim returns!

For seven years, Dindim the penguin lived alongside Seu João Pereira de Souza for
eight months each year. After his annual molt, he would spend four months in the
wild before returning to Seu João in Ilha Grande. This is the true story of their extraordinary friendship.
